The Department of Russian of Philological Faculty of Petrozavodsk State University created an innovative SME "Center of linguistic research and expertise." The main activity of the Center is expert examination of various documents involved in paperwork, advertising texts, texts of other styles and genres using techniques and approaches already proven in modern applied linguistics, including those by teachers of the department of Russian language PetrSU:

• when establishing the circumstances related to humiliation of honor, dignity and business reputation;
• when establishing the circumstances related to extremist activity;
  to establish the degree of similarity of trademarks, domain names, trade names and other intellectual property rights and copyrights;
• when establishing the circumstances related to copyright infringement (plagiarism);
• when establishing the circumstances related to the functioning of advertised products;
• to establish the semantic content of text documents, regulations, contracts, etc.;
• to identify covert information in oral conversations and written texts;
• in determining the circumstances surrounding threat or extortion;
• in other situations requiring specialized linguistic knowledge. 
  

The demand for this kind of service in recent years has increased substantially: the department of the Russian language and the dean’s office of the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU regularly receive requests to carry out linguistic expertise, including those from law enforcement officials, the FSB, of legal authorities and other legal entities and individuals. Linguistic examination centers are established in many universities of Russia.
