Petrozavodsk State University, the Flagship University of the Republic of Karelia, hosted the opening ceremony of the International Trout Forum “Modern Technologies. Safety and Legal Regulation”.

The Forum aims to develop a strategy for comprehensive development of the industry, introduction of new technologies and developments of Russian and foreign scientists, and the establishment of industry union as a platform for experience and exchange and dialogue between power, science, society, and business.

The events of the Forum (overview lecture, topical platforms, roundtable, plenary meeting) will focus on the development of international cooperation, the introduction of modern resource saving and environmentally efficient technologies, as well as on solving problems of fish health, quality, and safety of aquaculture products, electronic veterinary certification.

The opening ceremony convened representatives of government agencies, business, and science.

On behalf of the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov, the participants were addressed by the acting Head of the Republic of Karelia Aleksandr Chepik. He highlighted the importance of the Forum for the development of the Republic.

“Now over 60 enterprises work in this area. This means workplaces and certain competencies, so we should discuss all issues related to the development of this industry: training personnel, equipment, young fries, fish feed, development of tourism. These problems should be solved as a single package.” Aleksandr Chepik expressed his gratitude to Petrozavodsk University for training specialists for the fisheries sector. “It is important for students to be immediate participants of discussions and learn about the latest developments we have, prepare and make proposals, and thus gain experience.”

The Rector of the Flagship University of the Republic of Karelia Anatoly Voronin in his welcoming word told about the training of specialists.

“For us, it is an honour to host such a representative forum, see a great number of our partners, colleagues, graduates. Today the university trains specialists at all levels of education: Bachelor and Master Degrees, postgraduate studies. Our Institute of Biology, Ecology and Agricultural Technologies is the only one in Russia that trains specialists in trout farming. Currently, PetrSU has over 100 students studying on the relevant programs. This allows us to timely train personnel for the fish industry. It is important for us that fish farms place our students for practical training, engage in research jointly with our scientists. I am sure that this interaction will only grow stronger,” said Anatoly Voronin.

The University has the Aquaculture Center, small innovative enterprises, which develop new technologies and equipment for fish farms.

“These units involve students who become a driving force in generating new ideas. All this, as well as joint work with the partners of the university, helps us train qualified specialists who are competent with the cutting-edge technologies, and upon their graduation can step up at developing fish farms,” said the Rector of PetrSU.

Among other speakers at the ceremony were the Deputy Head of the Federal Fishery Agency Vasily Sokolov and the Deputy Director of the Department of Small and Medium Business of Rosselkhozbank Aleksey Istomin.

The organizers of the event are the Federal Fishery Agency, the Government of the Republic of Karelia, National Agency of Social Communications.
