The Third research school based at mining park "Tulmozere" has come to an end
Summer research and labor school of the SBI of PetrSU was held at the Tulmozero ironworks.
The Tulmozero plant is perhaps the only surviving monument to the mining industry of Karelia of the late 1800s - early 1900s. The construction of the plant involved huge investments, it was equipped with the latest technology and designed for production of several tons of pig iron per day. But five years after the opening, the plans of the founders were disturbed by the economic crisis. The modern enterprise became a "white elephant" and was soon closed. In 1930s there were a number of attempts to restore the plant, but they did not receive practical implementation. Since then the plant has gradually been destroyed to end up in ruins.
The ruins attract researchers and tourists. Thus, in the past several years the plant has been hosting the Summer School of the SBI of Petrozavodsk State University. This year, the participants continued to study the history of the plant and the geological structure of the area, made a tour at the gallery of the plant, where they could see the functioning of the system pumping water and air, and also learned about the system of ore transportation to the plant and so on. In addition, students helped in landscaping the Tulmozero plant: they formed hiking trails, set pointers, did the clean-up, eliminated pits, built footbridges, and more.
The main event during the school was a feast dedicated to the anniversary of the opening of the mining park "Tulmozero", with music ensembles that performed songs. The workshop participants were actively involved in the preparation and conduct of the festival, worked as guides and volunteers, maintained order in the park and listened to songs in Karelian, Finnish, Swedish and Russian languages, took part in folk games, tasted Karelian fish soup and Karelian pies.
The school was held in the framework of the Program of student organizations of Petrozavodsk State University with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science.
