The Institute of Physics and Technology of PetrSU hosted the Open Contests in Educational and Sports Robotics – RoboSkills RK 2018.

Over 150 teams from Petrozavodsk, Sortavala, Kostomuksha, Leningrad and Murmansk Oblasts, took part in the contest. The contestants were 280 schoolchildren, students and adults interested in technical creativity and science.

At the opening ceremony the guests were welcomed by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of PetrSU Konstantin Tarasov: “It is nice to see that the RoboSkills contest becomes more ambitious with each passing year. There more and more nominations, the geography of contests broadens too. Petrozavodsk State University plans to open a new Bachelor Degree program for enthusiasts of electronics and robotics. If you came here to support someone and are interested in something else, take a look at what our university offers. Believe me, PetrSU has everything to help you make your creative ideas and dreams come true.

At the RoboSkills beginners and experienced robot engineers competed in one or several events out of thirteen: autonomous line race, robot sumo (several events), robot football (2x2), rally, labyrinth, creative contest, contest of mobile art objects, sculptures and Goldberg machines etc.

Alongside contests the RoboSkills offered entertainment events organized by the partners. Among them was the booth of the Virtual Reality Center where everyone could play with a robodog or compete with drones. The classrooms hosted workshops that gathered both children and their parents. For instance, together with the Sampo Quantorium and the Lyceum No.1 PetrSU held a workshop on working with Robbo constructors.

The Roboskills is included in the program of scientific and technology events of PetrSU and thus included a seminar that presented projects of the contest of technical creativity. The projects were developed by teams comprised of students and schoolchildren under the guidance of specialists in IT, electronics, robotics, teachers and lecturers of PetrSU. This year the contest featured promising projects developed by young pupils of the Sampo Quantorium, Ilmarinen Laboratory and Neosystems North-West company, school clubs of technical creativity. Junior schoolchildren impressed everyone as well. They presented fresh memorable ideas. The most successful projects were recommended for participation in national and interuniversity events and contests.

The event was organized by Petrozavodsk State University, Rovesnik Resource Center for Development of Additional Education, Lyceum No.1, RoboSkills community.

The event took place in the framework of the career orientation work of PetrSU for 2018 and the strategic project “Transformation of STEM-cluster of the system of additional education of the Republic of Karelia into regional STEAM-cluster” of the Flagship University Development Program.
