New Technologies in Medical Education

In this day and age, medical education is not conceivable without simulation technologies.

Training a qualified specialist is impossible without contact and communication with real patients, but increasingly the safety and well-being of a patient are presenting an ethical problem.

One of the means to achieve this goal is simulate-based education.

The Institute of High Biomedical Technologies of PetrSU has developed an imitator of human biological liquids. The researchers of this area are the Director of the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies Doctor of Biological Sciences Tatiana Volkova and the Director of the United Multifunctional Center for Module Education Igor Shubin.

“Simulation technologies in medical education are part and parcel of a modern approach to the safe training of students for clinical practice with a focus on the prevention of medical errors, consolidation of knowledge and skills learned within the professional education programs, as well as stimulation of creative development of the students. Teaching the methods of working with whole blood, its components, and other biological liquids is related to certain issues, the primary of which is the restriction applied to people without special education and attestation, first of all students,” believes the Professor of the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Immunology and Laboratory Diagnostics of the Institute of Medicine Tatiana Volkova.

“Previously medical students studied the methods of clinical diagnostics on donor blood and its components. It is expensive and dangerous, as there is a risk of contracting dormant infections. PetrSU has developed an imitator that visually and functionally is no different from real blood.

People who do not have special education and attestation cannot work with whole blood and its components; such is the provision of the Federal Law. Yet this category includes students of medical university and colleges who among other things study methods of clinical diagnostics. This inconsistency has been resolved by PetrSU. We have developed a blood imitator – a safe compound with which students can learn the methods of determining blood type, Rh factor, glucose and cholesterol level, and other components,” said the Director of the United Multifunctional Center of Module Education Igor Shubin.

In 2018 the Super Blood project was awarded the grant of the Innovation Promotion Fund within the UMNIK program, and in 2017 it won the gold medal at the international expo “High Technologies, Innovations, Investments” in Saint Petersburg.

The developer of this blood is the junior research fellow of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Innate Immunity Vladimir Iliukha.

“Super Blood looks like and behaves just like real blood does. This means that a student will not be under psychological stress once he or she starts working in real settings. The blood simulator is to all intents and purposes a training module like mannequins used for practicing catheter installation and resuscitation. It is supplemented with the imitators of zoliclones – diagnostic serum used to determine blood group and Rh factor. Our imitators can be stored for over a year, no one has ever achieved such results. Our product has high quality and trustworthy results,” said Vladimir Iliukha.

The imitators are characterized by their safety, low-cost price, functionality and readiness, unambiguity of results and multifunctionality.

The imitators do not have components or derivatives of biological liquids and thus can be used in teaching students. The imitators can be recommended for teaching various methods of clinical laboratory diagnostics such as determining blood group, Rh factor, glucose and cholesterol levels, and other blood components. At the same time, the algorithm of processing the imitator corresponds to that used in clinical practice, namely in determining blood group and Rh factor the basic reaction of the test system is the reaction of haemagglutination that can be successfully demonstrated with the use of blood imitators and isohemagglutinating serum.

Currently, the employees of the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies hold demonstrational courses of using the developed test systems in action.
